Flip a bottle of conditioner over and most ingredient lists read the same after the first five or six lines: a repeating cast of oils and conditioning agents that show up on nearly every shelf in the aisle. Ours doesn’t, not for a stretch in the middle. After the aloe and the cleansing agents, our Moisturising Conditioner’s label lists honey, then fructose, glucose, inositol, sucrose and trehalose, one after another — a run of sugar names that looks unusual if you’re used to actually reading a label rather than skimming it. None of that is decoration. Every one of those ingredients, along with glycerin and sodium PCA, belongs to the same family: a humectant. Here’s what that word means, what each ingredient in that family is actually doing, and where the whole category runs into its limits.
What a Humectant Actually Does
A humectant is an ingredient that attracts water and holds onto it. That’s the whole definition — it doesn’t clean, and on its own it doesn’t coat or smooth a rough surface either. The mechanism is fairly simple: humectant molecules are covered in sites that form loose bonds with water molecules, so they draw water in from whatever’s nearby — the air, the rest of the product, the surface of wet hair — and hold onto it more readily than plain water holds onto itself. Applied to hair, that means helping the fibre keep more of the water it picks up in the shower, for longer, than it would unassisted.
Humectant, Emollient, Occlusive: Three Different Jobs
Ingredient lists get confusing partly because these three words are used loosely and almost interchangeably in marketing, even though they describe three different mechanisms. A humectant attracts and holds water. An emollient works differently — it doesn’t add water, it smooths the hair’s outer surface, filling the small rough spots on the cuticle so the fibre feels softer. An occlusive is different again: it sits on top of the hair as a thin film and physically slows down how fast water already there can evaporate back out. A formula can lean on one of these, two, or all three — they’re not mutually exclusive, just separate jobs.

Glycerin: The Ingredient List’s Workhorse
Glycerin turns up in an enormous share of skin and hair products, across every price point, and the reason is fairly unglamorous: it’s a small, stable molecule that’s reliably good at its one job. Structurally it’s a sugar alcohol, covered in the same kind of water-attracting sites as the sugars further down this list, which is part of why it behaves so similarly to them. It isn’t there to make a formula smell a certain way or feel a certain texture on its own — it’s there because it works consistently, and because it gets along with almost everything else you might put in a bottle alongside it.
Sodium PCA and Hair’s Own Moisture
Sodium PCA is a salt form of a compound already naturally present in skin and, to a lesser extent, hair — one of several small molecules that make up what’s often called the natural moisturising factor, the mix skin and hair use to hold onto their own water. Adding sodium PCA to a formula is essentially topping up something hair already has some of, in a form that attracts water efficiently. Like glycerin, it’s in both our shampoo and our conditioner.
Honey and the Sugars That Follow It
Honey, fructose, glucose, inositol, sucrose, trehalose — that’s six ingredient names in a row, most of which don’t get spelled out this fully on many labels. Treat it as exactly what it is: a concentrated source of small sugar molecules, not an active with any healing or antibacterial property. What matters about honey in a cosmetic formula is that it’s largely composed of fructose and glucose, the same two simple sugars listed separately right after it, plus water. Sucrose is the sugar most people already know from a sugar bowl. Inositol is a smaller, sugar-like molecule built the same way, with multiple water-attracting sites on a small frame. Trehalose is worth calling out specifically: among sugars, it’s known for holding onto water unusually well, which is why it turns up in formulas looking for a humectant beyond the basics.
What all of them share, honey included, is the same underlying mechanism as glycerin — small molecules with several water-attracting sites, doing the same job in slightly different shapes. It’s a sugar-and-humectant complex, not an oil blend and not a treatment ingredient.
The Catch: Humectants Need Somewhere to Draw Water From
Here’s the honest limit of everything above. A humectant pulls water in from its surroundings, and if the surrounding air is very dry, there’s less water there for it to draw on. In genuinely low-humidity conditions, a humectant-heavy product can feel like it’s doing less, simply because the ingredient’s whole job depends on ambient moisture that isn’t available in the same quantity. That isn’t a flaw specific to our formula — it’s true of glycerin, sodium PCA and every sugar humectant, in any product, from any brand. It’s why humectants are usually formulated alongside something that helps seal moisture in once it’s there, and it’s part of why contact time matters for a rinse-off product like our conditioner: the few minutes it actually sits on wet hair, before rinsing, is when these ingredients have the most to work with. We don’t sell a leave-in product to layer on afterwards — our range stops at a rinse-off shampoo and conditioner — so if you’re in a very dry climate, that’s a real limit worth knowing about, on our formula or anyone else’s.
What’s Actually in Our Two Formulas
Here’s how the humectants above actually show up on our own two labels, not just in general.
- Moisturising Shampoo: contains sodium PCA and glycerin. Built to clean without stripping hair’s own moisture along the way. Vegan.
- Moisturising Conditioner: contains sodium PCA and glycerin too, plus the full sugar block above — honey, fructose, glucose, inositol, sucrose and trehalose. Applied to mid-lengths and ends, left two to five minutes, then rinsed out — that window is the contact time mentioned above. Not vegan, because of the honey.
Because the conditioner contains honey, it isn’t suitable for anyone avoiding animal-derived ingredients on principle, and that carries over to the Hair Ritual Set, since the set is simply the two products together. The shampoo, on its own, is vegan.
Who the Honey-and-Sugar Block Isn’t For
If you avoid animal-derived ingredients — for ethical reasons, dietary reasons, or simply preference — the conditioner isn’t formulated for you, and neither is the set. That’s a straightforward exclusion, not small print: honey is an animal-derived ingredient, and no amount of chemistry above changes that. If it matters to you, the shampoo alone is vegan and still carries sodium PCA and glycerin as humectants — it simply doesn’t carry the sugar block that’s specific to the conditioner.
