Take the coating away and smoothness has to come from somewhere else: a gentler wash that doesn’t rough up the cuticle as much in the first place, and ingredients that pull and hold water in the hair shaft rather than sitting on top of it. That’s a slower, cumulative kind of smoothness rather than an instant one, and hair coming straight off a silicone-heavy routine can feel comparatively rough, or less obviously “slippery,” for the first wash or two before it settles.
