Yes, plainly, with no caveat that changes the answer. Sodium Coco-Sulfate — also written Sodium Coco Sulfate, or on an ingredient list as one word, Sodium Cocosulfate — is a sulfate surfactant. Chemically it’s built the way SLS is: a fatty alcohol reacted with sulfuric acid, then neutralised into a foaming salt. If a shampoo lists it and calls itself sulfate-free, that shampoo is wrong, not you for questioning it.

Where it genuinely differs from SLS is upstream, in what the fatty alcohol was to begin with. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is usually made from a single, isolated chain — lauryl alcohol, 12 carbons long — separated out before it’s sulfated, typically starting from palm kernel oil or synthetic, petrochemical-derived fatty alcohols. Sodium Coco-Sulfate skips that isolation step: it’s made directly from coconut oil, which is naturally a mixture of fatty acids of different chain lengths, mostly around C12–C14 but not only that. What ends up in the bottle is a blend of chain lengths from coconut oil, not one isolated molecule from a palm or petrochemical feedstock — same family of chemistry, different raw material, different purification.

SLS vs SLES: The Difference That Actually Matters

SLS and SLES get lumped together, but one extra manufacturing step separates these close relatives. Sodium Laureth Sulfate starts from the same fatty alcohol as SLS, but before it’s sulfated it’s reacted with ethylene oxide first — a process called ethoxylation, which is what the “eth” in the name is flagging. The effect is a milder, more water-soluble, foamier surfactant than plain SLS, which is part of why SLES turns up so often in mass-market shampoo: it cleans effectively while feeling less harsh than SLS alone.

That extra step is also where the two part company for anyone formulating to a natural standard. Ethoxylation is a petrochemical process, and standards like COSMOS don’t permit ethoxylated ingredients in a certified formula — that’s a rule about what a raw material is allowed to go through on its way to becoming an ingredient, not a safety verdict on SLES, which is widely used and perfectly legal in cosmetics. Why “Sulfate-Free” Became Marketing Shorthand

Sulfates earned their reputation honestly, in one specific way: at high concentration and used alone, SLS can strip more oil and moisture from hair than most people want from a daily wash, and irritate skin with prolonged contact, especially around the eyes. Somewhere along the way, “sulfate-free” turned from a specific formulation detail into a blanket proxy for “gentle” — a single word doing the job an ingredient list used to do.

A proxy isn’t a guarantee, though. “Sulfate-free” tells you a sulfate isn’t the primary cleanser. It doesn’t tell you the formula is automatically gentle — plenty of sulfate-free shampoos lean on other strong surfactants at a high concentration — and it doesn’t tell you anything about the rest of the bottle: the conditioning agents, the concentration, whether one harsh surfactant is working alone or several milder ones are sharing the load. A single word on the front of a bottle was never going to carry that much.

Why COSMOS-Standard Formulas Still Use It

COSMOS Natural certification is a standard about raw material origin and permitted processing, not a ban on any ingredient that merely sounds harsh. It sets rules for how much of a formula must come from natural or agro-derived sources, and what processing those sources may go through. Sodium Cocosulfate, made from coconut oil through processing COSMOS accepts, qualifies as a natural-origin surfactant under that standard. That’s the actual line COSMOS draws — where a raw material came from and what was done to it, not whether the result is technically a sulfate.
