The Hair Ritual, Explained: Why We Kept It to Two Steps

Hair care has the same problem skincare does: it’s easy to keep adding products until the shelf is full and the routine quietly stops happening. When we built the hair side of CapyOnsen, we asked ourselves the same question we asked on the skincare side: what’s the smallest ritual that still does the real job? For hair, the honest answer was two steps — not a five-product range padded out to look more serious than it needs to be. If you’re coming to this from a different shampoo entirely, here’s what actually happens in the first few washes of switching.

The Case for Stopping at Two

Hair fundamentally needs two things done well, every wash: get properly clean, and come out smooth and manageable rather than tangled and rough. Masks, oils, leave-in treatments, and heat protectants can all be genuinely useful, but they solve narrower, situational problems — they’re not what most hair needs on an ordinary Tuesday. A hair mask used twice and then left in the shower to gather dust helps nobody. So instead of building a range that looks impressive on a shelf, we built two products that are each designed to earn their place in every single wash.

Step One: The Moisturising Shampoo

The ritual opens with our Moisturising Shampoo — a gentle, certified natural formula built around aloe leaf juice, sea kale, ginkgo, and burdock root extract, designed to cleanse without stripping so hair comes out soft rather than squeaky. It’s COSMOS Natural certified, 99% natural origin, vegan, gluten-free, and nut-free, made in the EU. It isn’t fragrance-free — it carries a warm, fruity-woody scent — which we’d rather tell you upfront than have you discover after the bottle arrives. For the fuller explanation of what makes this specific formula moisturising rather than just labelled that way, see what makes a moisturising shampoo different.

Step Two: The Moisturising Conditioner

The ritual closes with the Moisturising Conditioner — a richer formula built around aloe leaf juice, ginkgo, and burdock root extract, designed specifically to smooth dry, difficult ends without weighing down the roots. Applied through the mid-lengths and ends and left on for 2 to 5 minutes, it’s doing a genuinely different job than the shampoo: not cleaning, but smoothing and conditioning the hair the shampoo just cleaned. It’s COSMOS Natural certified and nut-free, made in the EU. Unlike the shampoo, it isn’t vegan — it contains a small amount of honey — and it isn’t fragrance-free or gluten-free either. We list the exceptions plainly rather than let “certified natural” imply a longer list of claims than the formula actually supports. The placement and timing matter here too — see conditioner, in the right order for the technique details.

Both formulas are COSMOS Natural certified, which is a real, independently audited standard — not just a phrase on a label. If you want the full, honest breakdown of what that certification actually covers, and what it doesn’t, we’ve written that up separately in COSMOS Certified: What the Label Actually Means.

Why Two, Not More

Cleanse and condition cover the two things hair actually needs every wash. Past that point, additional steps start solving increasingly specific, optional problems rather than the core job — which is exactly why we stopped at two rather than padding the range out for the sake of a longer shelf presence. We had formulas on the table for a weekly hair mask and a leave-in treatment, and left both out of this launch pair on purpose. Not because they’re bad ideas — because a two-step ritual has to pass the “will I actually do this every wash” test, and both of those are genuinely optional additions for specific concerns, not default essentials for most people. The two-step core stays the standing ritual; anything beyond it should be a deliberate addition for a specific reason, not a default nobody questioned.

Who This Ritual Is For (and Isn’t)

It’s built for people who want a straightforward hair routine they’ll actually keep up wash after wash, who care about certified natural formulation, and who’d rather use two products that each earn their place than ten that mostly don’t. It’s not built for anyone managing a specific, diagnosed scalp condition — that’s a conversation for a pharmacist or dermatologist, not a shampoo and conditioner. And if a fully vegan routine matters to you specifically, we’d rather be exact: the shampoo qualifies on its own, but the pair as a whole doesn’t, because of the honey in the conditioner. It’s also not built for anyone chasing a multi-step, treatment-heavy hair care regimen with a mask, oil, and leave-in on rotation — that’s a genuinely different goal, and a two-step ritual isn’t trying to be a substitute for it, just a well-built version of what most hair needs on an ordinary day.

Starting With the Shampoo

The shampoo is €20.90 on its own, and it’s the place to start either way — see the full formula and how to use it. The technique above is what makes the conditioner step worth doing properly once both bottles are in hand.

How to Use the Full Ritual

Shampoo through wet hair and scalp, rinse thoroughly, then apply the conditioner through the mid-lengths and ends and rinse again. That’s the whole ritual, start to finish.

The Thirty-Second Version

Shampoo. Condition. Rinse. That’s the whole ritual — no five-step hair care regimen to keep up with, no drawer of half-used masks and treatments waiting for a free weekend that doesn’t arrive. Two products, each with one clearly defined job, used consistently.

Two steps covers most weeks. The one stretch that genuinely asks more of a routine is a swimming holiday — what salt, chlorine and sun actually do, and the habits that help most.

FAQ

Why does the Hair Ritual only have two products?

Because cleansing and conditioning cover the two things hair genuinely needs every wash. Masks, oils, and treatments can be useful, but they’re situational additions for specific concerns, not nightly essentials for most people — so we built the launch ritual around the two steps that actually earn a place in every wash.

Is the Hair Ritual Set vegan?

The shampoo is vegan on its own. The conditioner contains a small amount of honey, so the set as a whole isn’t fully vegan. We’d rather say that plainly than let “certified natural” suggest more than the ingredient list actually supports.

Starting the Ritual

If the reasoning here matches how you actually want to take care of your hair — two products, each with one job, used consistently, rather than a routine you have to remember how to do — the Moisturising Shampoo is the straightforward way to start.
